GENDER BASED VIOLENCE RESEARCH TRAINING: UNDERSTANDING THE SENSITIVITIES AND COMPLEXITIES

Overview
This is the fifth iteration of a course based on the manual Researching Violence against Women: A Practical Guide for Researchers and Activists written by Mary Ellsberg and Lori Heise. The two-week course was piloted in South Africa, in partnership with the South African Medical Research Council (MRC) and local gender-based violence (GBV) networks. A Spanish course for Central American participants was offered in Nicaragua through the Latin American Alliance for the Prevention of Gender-based Violence (InterCambios) in partnership with the Center for Demographic and Health Research, Leon University (Nicaragua), and the Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo (Brazil).The course has also been offered regionally in Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia in collaboration with the GBV Prevention Network; Liverpool VCT; Muhimbili University of Health & Allied Sciences and Addis Continental Institute of Public Health, The International Center for Research on Women, Medical Research Council of South Africa, and Program for Appropriate Technologies in Health (PATH).
Aim of the Course
To strengthen the capacity of service providers, activists and researchers to participate in research and to use it effectively, by developing an understanding of all the factors associated with research planning and implementation.
