The Southern African Media & Gender Institute (SAMGI)
SAMGI is the Focal NGO for South Africa

Samgi1
Samgi2

OBJECTIVE:
SAMGI promotes human rights by increasing the range of voices heard in Southern Africa through participatory education, advocacy, lobbying and media production to improve the status of women. SAMGI promotes grassroots activism through gender advocacy, media production and training.

PROGRAM AREAS:
SAMGI consists out of four units: Women’s Media Watch, the Media Production Unit, the Men’s Unit and the Training Unit. Our projects fall into the following categories, Citizens in Dialogue (promoting human rights by increasing the range of voices at all levels of society), Justice for Gender (to monitor, lobby and advocate for gender equality) and Gendocracy (to build capacity in civil society to participate in building stronger democracies).

Women's Media Watch is a progressive, human rights media-monitoring body in Southern Africa, dedicated to empowering women and engaging in the transformation of the media. Among other things, Women’s Media Watch monitors the reporting of Gender Based Violence in the media.

The Media Production Unit fulfils SAMGI’s media development and production skills and also offers their services to other NGOs and CBOs.

The Men’s Unit aims to strengthen the inputs on men in gender transformation and fighting against gender based violence.

The Training unit trains community workers, prison inmates, prison warders, trainers, journalists, companies etc. in the SADC region on gender (inc. gender based violence), media literacy and media skills.
