Gender & Development Networking Centre - Kenya

Mission

Our vision is to have a society where communities co-exist, & inter-depend, in their pursuit for equity and well being for a GBV free society. Our mission is to link & strengthen the capacities of vulnerable individuals & families, communities & institutions, thereby forging a common front, which is, pro-active in its quest for gender equity, social justice & well being for all. Service delivery: counselling, legal advice, shelter/refuge, referrals, etc.

Goal

To support partnership & participatory approach of intervention to social economic & health challenges through sustainable & organized strategy through asset-based approach targeting.

Objectives

  • Education and Training
  • Community Mobilization for action against GBV
  • Research and documentation on: Environmental research, Gender research & analysis, Policy research, HIV/AIDS
  • Health Human Rights & Development

All these are value added in the strategic partnership with Resource Conflict Institute (RECONCILE)'s objectives which are:

  • To promote the formulation of policies, laws and institutions that empower communities to manage natural resources and related conflict;
  • To promote the implementation of policies and the enforcement of laws that enables resource dependent communities to manage natural resources and related conflicts.
  • To build the capacity of communities to effectively participate in policy and legislative processes and engage with institutions of governance for improved conservation and sustainable management of natural resources

Key Areas of Work

  • Prevention at the community-level: community education, mobilization, awareness raising, etc.
  • Policy / Advocacy
  • Research
  • Training and Capacity Building

GBV Focal Issues

  • Domestic violence
  • Rape/sexual assault
  • Sexual harassment

GBV Prevention Strategies

Over the last 3 years GADEN-Centre has been involved in campaigns on GBV through:

  • Training of farm workers
  • Community awareness through campaigns and outreaches
  • Advocacy change of policies and creating awareness on the established laws and policies.
  • The current arrangement of partnership will enhance the legal awareness and research on policies since RECONCILE is police and research organization.
  • Institutional capacity development for partners.
  • Mainstreaming of GBV programmes a long natural resources and policy discussions

Key Lessons

  • Participatory approach to GBV programmes is more acceptable
  • Policies to effectively address GBV are lacking and even those in place are not properly and maximally used by the beneficiaries
  • Culture and attitude towards gender issues is still a big challenge.
  • Some of these key lessons have been documented by FAO through best practices case studies in 2006.
