In Her Shoes is an interactive, educational tool originally developed by the Washington State Coalition on Domestic Violence to raise awareness among service providers and community members about the day-to-day reality for women experiencing abuse. The exercise allows participants to ‘walk in the shoes’ of women as they seek help from a variety of resources, including family and friends, health, legal and counselling services, religious leaders and others, and to gain a deeper understanding of the numerous challenges and barriers they face. In 2010 the Communication Materials TWG began the process of adapting the In Her Shoes Toolkit. The process is currently being coordinated by a core group of activists from the region. A highly successful, dynamic and productive meeting was held in Kampala, Uganda, from the 22nd to 24th March 2011.
Twenty eight activists and practitioners from 21 Sub-Saharan Africa countries - Botswana, Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Malawi, Tanzania, South Africa, Rwanda, Nigeria, Mozambique, Burundi, Mali, Angola, DRC, Sierra Leone, Ghana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Kenya and Somalia – met and discussed the Latin American version of the Toolkit, women’s realities and experiences of violence in our region in all its diversity.
Activists discussed and agreed on objectives for the Sub Saharan Africa Toolkit, format, style, themes for story lines and a timeline for completion of the Kit. Click here to find out more background information about In Her Shoes.
