Coalition on Violence Against Women – Kenya: Laikipia (West) Rapid Assessment of the Situation of Women and children in IDP Camps, April 2008. The report provides insight to violence experienced by women and children as a result of conflict over land in the larger Laikipia. The district is characterized by livestock theft, competition for water and land resources by pastoralists and farmers. The INFO Project: VIDEO, Fighting the Silence: Sexual Violence against Women in Congo "Fighting the Silence" tells the story of ordinary Congolese women and men who are struggling to change their society: one that prefers to blame victims rather than prosecute rapists. Rape survivors and their families speak out openly about the suffering they endured because their culture considers women second class citizens and rape as a taboo. Institute for War and Peace Reporting: Outcry of International Criminal Court’s scrapping of rape charges. This feature highlights the outrage of victims of sexual violence in DRC angered by court’s controversial move. Congolese women who’ve fallen victim to rape and related crimes say they feel badly let down by the decision of the International Criminal Court (ICC). The ICC recommends that all sexual violence charges relating to the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo, DRC should be dropped.The ICC decision followed an internal squabble over the protection of witness , which was reported by IWPR last week. Charges of sexual slavery were removed from the indictments against militia leaders Germain Katanga and Mathieu Ngudjolo, who face a confirmation of charges for hearing late this month in The Hague. Save the Children: No One to Turn To: The Under-reporting of Child Sexual Exploitation and Abuse by Aid Workers and Peacekeepers (2008). This report seeks to reinvigorate efforts to address the sexual abuse and exploitation of children by the very people hired to help them aid workers and peacekeepers. Based on research with communities and international organizations, this publication examines the chronic under-reporting of abuse and the inadequate response to it. It provides new analysis on why this abuse persists despite international efforts to stop it, and proposes new solutions to tackle it. World Bank: Young Men and the Construction of Masculinity in Sub-Saharan Africa: Implications for HIV/AIDS, Conflict, and Violence by Gary Barker and Christine Ricardo. This working paper from the World Bank examines the role of gender for young men in Africa, particularly as it relates to HIV/AIDS, conflict, and violence. The aim of this paper is to explore what a gender perspective means, as applied to young men in Africa, when focusing on conflict, violence, and HIV/AIDS. It explores the construction of manhood in Africa and argues for the application of a more sophisticated gender analysis that also includes men and boys.
